Epiphanies
Epiphanies is a suite of nine waterless
planographs created in 1992 by artist Vera Sprunt. (Waterless planography is essentially lithography without
the need for dampening). All of the images were hand printed on archival
Ragcoat paper at 21 Steps, a print shop owned and run by Tamarind Master Printer Jeffrey
Ryan. Each print is 17.75 inches x 17.75 inches in an edition of twenty.
Epiphanies explores various combinations of
drawing and photography. The suite
begins with an emphasis on photography and concludes with an emphasis on
drawing. Epiphany-February 16,
1991, the conclusive
print in the suite, is part of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the
Arts permanent collection.
This body of
work begins with a look at the petroglyphs of the American Southwest. Their fragile condition and archetypal
interpretations were an inspiration behind this body of work. In its entirety these prints reference
the past, present and future as fleeting moments of imagined and/or experienced
understanding. It is these moments
the artist conceives as epiphanies.
